Liebe WordPress Community,<\/p>\n
wir, das Organisations-Team des WordCamp Retreat Soltau, wenden uns heute mit einem besonderen Anliegen an euch und m\u00f6chten euch aktiv dazu aufrufen, rege von der Kommentarfunktion Gebrauch zu machen und uns eure Sichtweise zu diesem Thema mitzuteilen.<\/p>\n
Worum geht es?<\/strong><\/p>\n Vor einigen Tagen hat sich das Organisations-Team des WordCamp Retreat Soltau vor Ort in Soltau getroffen um langsam aber sicher die \u201ehei\u00dfe Phase\u201c einzul\u00e4uten und detaillierte Planungen vorzunehmen. In ziemlich genau drei Monaten ist es soweit und wir freuen uns sehr darauf, gemeinsam mit der Community sch\u00f6ne, spannende und produktive Tage in Soltau zu verbringen.<\/p>\n Im Zuge dieser Planungen haben wir uns auch dar\u00fcber unterhalten, wie wir den Umgang mit freien Tickets f\u00fcr bestimmte Gruppen von Teilnehmern (z.B. Volunteers, Speaker) handhaben wollen. Diese Unterhaltung f\u00fchrte zu einer intensiven, leidenschaftlichen und durchaus auch hitzigen Diskussion, die letzten Endes aber im Interesse aller, also der gesamten Community, gef\u00fchrt wurde. Gab es in der Vergangenheit immer mal wieder kleinere Unterhaltungen zu diesem Thema, so wurde nun die Gunst der Stunde genutzt um dieses sehr essentielle Thema in gro\u00dfer Runde zu besprechen.<\/p>\n Freie Tickets? Ich verstehe nicht ganz.<\/b><\/p>\n Im Rahmen eines WordCamps fallen viele hundert Stunden an Vorbereitungs-, Planungs- und Durchf\u00fchrungszeit an. Diese Arbeit wird von zahlreichen Menschen in aller Regel in ihrer Freizeit geleistet \u2013 v\u00f6llig ohne Bezahlung.<\/p>\n Nat\u00fcrlich liegt es da nahe, dass man diesen flei\u00dfigen Helferlein eine entsprechende Belohnung f\u00fcr ihre geleisteten Dienste zu Gute kommen l\u00e4sst. Bei dieser Belohnung kann es sich z.B. um freie Eintrittstickets f\u00fcr den Besuch des WordCamps handeln.<\/p>\n Im konkreten Fall des WordCamp Retreat Soltau w\u00fcrde dies so aussehen, dass die Person, die freien Eintritt erh\u00e4lt, nunmehr nur noch das entsprechende Hotelzimmer bezahlen m\u00fcsste. Der Eintritt zum WordCamp selbst w\u00e4re jedoch frei.<\/p>\n Wer w\u00fcrde diese freien Tickets bekommen?<\/b><\/p>\n Die kurze Antwort: F\u00fcr gew\u00f6hnlich alle Personen, die sich in besonderer Art und Weise an einem WordCamp verdient machen. Dies w\u00e4ren:<\/p>\n Die Volunteers:<\/em><\/p>\n Freiwillige Helferinnen und Helfer, die ihre Zeit auf den Veranstaltungen selbst zur Verf\u00fcgung stellen um wichtige Aufgaben vor Ort zu erf\u00fcllen.<\/p>\n Die Speaker:<\/em><\/p>\n Die Menschen, die ihr Wissen mit allen Teilnehmern des jeweiligen WordCamps teilen und h\u00e4ufig eine Menge Zeit in die Vorbereitung der Vortr\u00e4ge gesteckt haben<\/p>\n Das Organisations-Team:<\/em><\/p>\n Menschen, die stellvertretend f\u00fcr den WordPress Community Support (PBC) die Organisation eines WordCamps \u00fcbernehmen \u2013 von den ersten \u00dcberlegungen bis zur tats\u00e4chlichen Durchf\u00fchrung.<\/p>\n Wer bekommt keine freien Tickets?<\/b><\/p>\n Kurz gesagt: Alle anderen.<\/p>\n Nun gut. Haben wir doch immer so gemacht?! Passt doch?! Oder etwa nicht?<\/p>\n Was passt denn an dieser Betrachtungsweise nicht?<\/b><\/p>\n Unserer Meinung nach: Vieles.<\/p>\n Fangen wir am konkreten Beispiel unseres WordCamp Retreat Soltau an. Bei unserem WordCamp Retreat, bei dem es sich um eine bisher noch nie dagewesene Form eines WordCamps handelt, ist es nicht mit den \u201ebesonderen\u201c Gruppen Volunteers, Speaker und Organisationsteam getan.<\/p>\n Da gibt es z.B. die Menschen, die sich ebenso f\u00fcr ein gelungenes WordCamp engagieren und Workshops vorbereiten und halten. Oder es gibt die Menschen, die sich dadurch einbringen, dass sie Aktivit\u00e4ten vor Ort veranstalten werden. Und dann gibt es da nat\u00fcrlich noch diejenigen, die aktiv auf einem Contributor Day am WordPress Projekt mitarbeiten. Und teilweise sogar selbst ein entsprechendes Team vor Ort leiten.<\/p>\n Soweit zum konkreten Fall. Betrachten wir das Ganze jedoch einmal ein St\u00fcck weit allgemeiner:<\/p>\n Was ist mit den vielen Menschen die sich tagt\u00e4glich auf unterschiedlichste Art und Weise am WordPress Projekt selbst oder in der Arbeit mit der WordPress Community beteiligen? Die, die vielleicht manchmal, vielleicht manchmal aber auch gar nicht auf WordCamps anwesend sind? Die, die regelm\u00e4\u00dfig auf unterschiedlichen Meetups quer durch Deutschland unterwegs sind um diese mit zu organisieren und \/ oder dort Vortr\u00e4ge zu halten?<\/p>\n Auch au\u00dferhalb fester Veranstaltungen wie WordCamps oder Meetups finden sich viele begeisterte Leute, die regelm\u00e4\u00dfig und intensiv an WordPress mitarbeiten, also \u201econtributen\u201c. Dies tun sie nicht etwa um eine Belohnung f\u00fcr ihre T\u00e4tigkeiten zu erhalten, sondern aus dem Grund, dass sie dem Projekt WordPress und der Community etwas zur\u00fcckzugeben m\u00f6chten. Man schaue sich einfach mal die vielen flei\u00dfigen Menschen in den Foren und den \u201eSlacks\u201c dieser Welt an.<\/p>\n Gehen wir aber noch einen Schritt weiter:<\/p>\n Was ist eigentlich mit den Teilnehmern selbst? Sind diese nicht auch wertvoll f\u00fcr eine solche Veranstaltung? Sind nicht sie es, die weite Anfahrtswege und hohe Anfahrts- und \u00dcbernachtungskosten auf sich nehmen um bei einer solchen Veranstaltung dabei zu sein?<\/p>\n Diese unsere Community zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie im h\u00f6chsten Ma\u00dfe inklusiv ist. V\u00f6llig entfernt von \u201ewir\u201c und \u201edie\u201c. Es ist unserem Verst\u00e4ndnis nach nicht richtig, einzelne Personen oder Gruppen besonders hervorzuheben.<\/p>\n Wollen wir Unterst\u00fctzung nun kategorisieren und werten?<\/b><\/p>\n Selbst wenn man es k\u00f6nnte \u2013 m\u00f6chte man es? Ist die Mithilfe am Swag-Stand mehr wert als die Betreuung einer Aktivit\u00e4t? Ab wann ist Unterst\u00fctzung f\u00fcr ein solches Camp besonders? Ab zwei Stunden \u201eArbeitszeit\u201c? Ab sechs Stunden? Oder erst ab wochenlang investierter Zeit?<\/p>\n F\u00fcr uns ist jeder Mensch, der zum Gelingen eines WordCamps und zum Ausbau unserer Community und dem Erfolg des WordPress Projekts beitr\u00e4gt gleich viel Wert. Jeder Mensch hat unterschiedliche Voraussetzungen im Rahmen derer er sich engagieren kann. Mal gibt es ruhige Phasen im Leben und bei der Arbeit, mal stressige. Die einen haben mehr Zeit sich zu engagieren, andere sind vielleicht durch famili\u00e4re Verpflichtungen st\u00e4rker eingebunden. Neben variierenden fachlichen Skills spielen auch k\u00f6rperliche oder mentale Beeintr\u00e4chtigungen manchmal eine Rolle. Also was denn nun? Freikarten f\u00fcr alle?<\/b><\/p>\n Wir m\u00f6chten eine faire L\u00f6sung schaffen die allen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern gerecht wird. Eine L\u00f6sung die eben nicht daf\u00fcr sorgt, dass manche gleicher als gleich sind.<\/p>\n Aus diesem Grund \u00fcberlegen wir, bei unserem WordCamp Retreat Soltau 2018 vollumf\u00e4nglich auf freie Eintrittskarten zu verzichten. Jede teilnehmende Person erwirbt ein entsprechendes Eintrittsticket \u2013 vom passiven Teilnehmer bis zum Lead-Organisator.<\/p>\n Wir glauben damit eine L\u00f6sung zu schaffen die allen gerecht wird – ganz ohne einzelne Personen oder Gruppen hervorzuheben.<\/p>\n Was denkst du? Februar 2018<\/p>\n Das Orga-Team des WordCamp Retreat Soltau 2018<\/p>\n English version<\/strong><\/p>\n Dear WordPress Community,<\/p>\n We, the organizing team of the WordCamp Retreat Soltau, address you today with a special matter, and would like to ask you to actively use the comment function and tell us your views on this topic.<\/p>\n What is it about?<\/b><\/p>\n A few days ago, the organizing team of WordCamp Retreat Soltau met on site to slowly but surely start the „hot phase“ and make detailed plans. The retreat will take place In just over three months, and we\u2019re looking forward to spending beautiful, exciting and productive days in Soltau together with the community.<\/p>\n As part of these plans, we also discussed how we want to handle free tickets for specific groups of participants (e.g., volunteers, speakers). This conversation led to an intense, passionate and heated discussion, which was ultimately in the interest of everyone, the entire community. In the past, there were always minor conversations on this topic, so now we used the time at hand to discuss this very essential topic.<\/p>\n Free tickets? I don\u2019t understand.<\/b><\/p>\n As part of a WordCamp many hundreds of hours of preparation, planning and implementation time are spent. This work is usually done by many people in their spare time – completely without pay.<\/p>\n Of course, it is obvious that these hardworking helpers would get a fitting reward for their services. This reward might be something like free entrance tickets for visiting WordCamps.<\/p>\n In the specific case of the WordCamp Retreat Soltau, this would mean the person who receives free admission would only have to pay for the hotel room. The entry to the WordCamp itself would be free.<\/p>\n Who would get these free tickets?<\/b><\/p>\n The short answer: Usually all people who make a special contribution to a WordCamp. These would be:<\/p>\n The volunteers:<\/em><\/p>\n Volunteers who spend their time at the events themselves to fulfill important tasks on site.<\/p>\n The speakers:<\/em><\/p>\n The people who share their knowledge with all participants of the respective WordCamps and have often put a lot of time into the preparation of their talks.<\/p>\n The organization team:<\/em><\/p>\n People who take upon them the organization of a WordCamp on behalf of the WordPress Community Support (PBC) – from the first considerations to the actual WordCamp.<\/p>\n Who doesn\u2019t get free tickets?<\/b><\/p>\n The short answer: Everybody else.<\/p>\n So, okay. Haven\u2019t we always done it like that? It\u2019s ok like that. Or isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n What could be wrong with this approach?<\/b><\/p>\n In our opinion: a lot.<\/p>\n Let’s start with a specific example of our WordCamp Retreat Soltau. At our WordCamp Retreat, which is an unprecedented form of WordCamp, it’s not only the „special“ groups of volunteers, speakers, and organizational teams that make it happen.<\/p>\n For instance, there\u2019s the people who are also committed to a successful WordCamp and prepare and hold workshops. There\u2019s also the people who get involved by organizing on-site activities. And then of course there\u2019s those who are actively involved \u00a0with the WordPress project on a Contributor Day. And sometimes even lead a corresponding team on site.<\/p>\n So much for this specific case. But let’s take a look at the bigger picture.<\/p>\n What about the many people who participate \u00a0the WordPress project every day in a variety of ways, or those working within the WordPress community? The ones that only sometimes go to WordCamps, or just don\u2019t go at all? Those who regularly go to various meetups to help organize and \/ or give lectures there?<\/p>\n There\u2019s many enthusiastic people who regularly and intensively collaborate or contribute to WordPress, also outside of the known events. They don\u2019t do this to get a reward for their activities, but for the simple reason that they want to give something back to project WordPress and the community. Just have a look at the many diligent people in the forums and the „slacks“ of this world.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s take it one step further:<\/p>\n What about the participants themselves? Aren\u2019t they valuable for an event like this? Aren\u2019t you the ones who travel far, and pay high travel- and accommodation costs to attend these events?<\/p>\n This community is characterized by being highly inclusive. Totally removed from „us“ and „them“. For us it doesn\u2019t seem right to privilege certain individuals or groups.<\/p>\n Do we want to categorize and assign value to support?<\/b><\/p>\n Even if one could – would one want to? Is helping at the swag booth worth more than looking after an activity? When will support for such a camp be special? From two hours „working time“? From six hours? Or only from weeks invested time?<\/p>\n For us, every person who contributes to the success of a WordCamp, to the expansion of our community and the success of the WordPress project has the same value. Every person has different conditions in which he can get involved. Sometimes there are quiet phases in life and work, sometimes stressful. Some have more time to engage, others may be more involved in family commitments. In addition to varying technical skills, physical or mental impairments may sometimes play a role.<\/p>\n All support is valuable – in all ways and in every intensity.<\/p>\n So what now? Free tickets for all?<\/b><\/p>\n We want to get to a fitting solution that is fair to all participants. A solution that makes sure nobody\u2019s more equal than others.<\/p>\n That’s why we’re considering \u00a0stepping away from free tickets at our WordCamp Retreat Soltau 2018. Each participant acquires a corresponding entry ticket – from the passive participant to the lead organizer.<\/p>\n We believe this would be a solution that will do justice to everyone – without highlighting individuals or groups.<\/p>\n What do you think?
